Birmingham Airport Air Cargo Apron

In May of 2023, the Birmingham Airport Authority (BAA) approved a self-funded $27M contract with Stone Building Company for the construction of new air cargo facility at the Birmingham-Shuttleworth International Airport.  The new facility will span 53,000 square feet and include warehouse space, loading dock, mezzanine areas, and an expanded concrete apron.  When complete, the facility will double the cargo handling ability at the airport and reduce costs for companies currently transporting cargo from Atlanta to Birmingham.

Stone Building Company subcontracted A.G. Peltz Group for the concrete and related paving activities.  A.G. Peltz Group’s scope includes 15,600 SY of 15” concrete pavement, 15,900 SY of permeable cement treated base (PCTB), joint sawing and sealing, and installing and securing a filter fabric to an underlying layer prior to PCTB placement.

A.G. Peltz Group started paving operations in January of 2024 and expects to complete the intermittent phased paving project in late Spring.   The project includes 19 paving lanes, varying in size from a low of 163 cubic yards to a high of 604 cubic yards.  Bama Concrete is supplying concrete, which includes a Type IL Cement, F Ash, C-33 Sand, #67 limestone and several admixtures.  The design engineer of record is CHA Consulting of Albany, NY.
