What is Cement Treated Base / Soil Cement

CTB is an intimate mixture of native soils and/or manufactured aggregates combined with Portland Cement Concrete and water.

Commonly referred to as soil-cement, cement-treated aggregate base, permeable cement-treated base, or cement-stabilized roadbed, this versatile material offers numerous strength and schedule advantages for construction and infrastructure projects.

Benefits of Cement Treated Base (CTB):

  • Enhanced Strength and Durability: CTB provides a stiffer and stronger base compared to conventional soil and aggregate bases, reducing strains in the pavement surface. This prolongs the pavement’s lifespan and delays the onset of common surface distresses like fatigue-induced cracks.
  • Material Savings: With higher load-bearing capacity, CTB layers can often be thinner than conventional bases while maintaining the same performance. This reduces material usage and overall costs.
  • Use of Local Materials: CTB can be created using local soils or in-place materials, lowering transportation costs and reducing the environmental impact.
  • Weather Resistance: CTB forms a stable working platform that remains functional even after inclement weather, minimizing construction delays.

Common Applications of Cement Treated Base:

  • Roadway Construction: Ideal for highways, urban streets, and rural roads where durability and cost efficiency are priorities.
  • Airport Pavements: CTB’s high strength and resilience meet strict FAA requirements, including the P-304 & P-307 specifications, making it a preferred choice for airport runways and taxiways.
  • Industrial Facilities: Provides strength and schedule advantages for heavy-duty pavements in manufacturing plants and distribution centers.
  • Parking Lots: Provides a long-lasting foundation for commercial and residential parking areas.
  • Temporary Construction Platforms: Offers an economical working platform for heavy equipment and construction traffic, even in adverse weather conditions.

Case Study: Honda Manufacturing Plant

One of the most notable applications of CTB concrete paving was at the Honda Manufacturing Plant. During early construction phases, delays were caused by saturated and unworkable dense-grade bases following heavy rains.

A.G. Peltz Group collaborated with Honda to develop a cost-effective solution:

  • A 4” CTB layer. The CTB layer quickly demonstrated its ability to withstand water infiltration, enabling the placement of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) within 24 hours of rainfall.
  • This innovation reduced the base layer’s thickness from 6” to 4” while maintaining cost competitiveness, resulting in CTB becoming the standard in Honda's paving program.
